QA contractor vs employee cost
How the cost of a QA contractor compares with an employee: what each model includes and excludes, and the annual totals for one dataset combination.
Figures from dataset v1.0, computed . Updated .
A QA contractor and a QA employee are costed with different formulas, so the comparison is between two totals that include different lines. The employee total adds employer contributions (social security and payroll taxes the employer pays on top of salary), benefits, equipment, recruiting and ramp (the weeks before a new hire works at full productivity) to salary. The contractor total is the contractor hourly rate times productive hours (the formula's 1,700-hour working year, adjusted for statutory leave and public holidays), plus any platform fee, recruiting and ramp, with no contributions, no mandatory benefits and no equipment.
What each model includes
Employee. Base salary, employer contributions, mandatory benefits, voluntary benefits, equipment and tooling, recruiting spread over 2.5 years, and onboarding ramp spread over 2.5 years. See the employee model.
Contractor. The contractor hourly rate for the role in the region, multiplied by productive hours for the country. A platform fee is added when the contractor is engaged through a platform. Recruiting is costed as for an employee, as a fee on the equivalent employee salary. Ramp is costed as for an employee, using the contractor's weekly cost. Contributions, mandatory benefits and equipment are not included, because the contractor carries them. See the contractor model.
Employer of record. An EOR (employer of record, a company that employs the person on your behalf) passes through salary, contributions and mandatory benefits and adds a monthly fee. The EOR guide covers that model.
Worked example
Worked example: a mid-level manual QA engineer in Germany under each model. As a contractor the median total is EUR 113,785 a year, against EUR 62,905 as an employee.
| Model | Annual | Not included |
|---|---|---|
| Employee | EUR 62,905 | voluntary benefits (not estimated); office space; management time; and bonuses and equity |
| Employer of record | EUR 69,873 | voluntary benefits; office space; management time; and bonuses and equity |
| Contractor | EUR 113,785 | employer contributions, mandatory benefits, equipment and paid leave (not billed) |
| Outsourced | EUR 137,425 | recruiting, onboarding ramp, equipment and your own management time |
Confidence grade (A, B or C, from the number and agreement of the sources): mid-level manual QA engineer in GermanyConfidence B.

The "Not included" column lists what each model leaves out. A total is comparable with another total only after reading that column.
Hourly comparison
Contractor rates are quoted per hour, so the employee total also needs an hourly form. The employee hourly equivalent divides the fully loaded annual cost by productive hours.
Worked example: a mid-level manual QA engineer in the United States. Salary divided by 2,080 paid hours gives USD 43 an hour. Total cost divided by 1,940 productive hours (1,700 + 8 x 30, for no days of statutory leave or public holidays, against the 30 days that the 1,700-hour year allows for, as this site reads the formula) gives USD 55 an hour. That fully loaded hourly figure includes the employer's contributions, equipment, recruiting and ramp, which the salary-only figure leaves out; a contractor or vendor rate is a price, and the contractor model adds a platform fee, recruiting and ramp on top of it.
Confidence grade (A, B or C, from the number and agreement of the sources): mid-level manual QA engineer in the United StatesConfidence B.

Lines that differ between the models
- Contributions and mandatory benefits appear in the employee total and not in the contractor total.
- Paid leave is inside the employee salary. A contractor is paid for hours worked, which is why the contractor formula uses productive hours.
- Equipment is bought by the employer for an employee and by the contractor for themselves.
- Platform fees appear only in the contractor total, and only when a platform is used.
- Recruiting and ramp appear in both.
What the comparison does not include
The dataset does not estimate the cost of misclassification, notice periods, termination costs or the legal tests that decide whether a person is a contractor or an employee. Those depend on the country and on the facts of the engagement. This site does not give tax or legal advice; the authority cited on each country page is the reference.
